What is on my network?
« on: October 10, 2006, 09:27:51 PM »
Hi
I run a SME-server 7.0 at home. It runs as a gateway with DHCP.
On the network I have a printer , a wireless accesspoint and a telephone Adapter.
How do I find the printer, accesspoint and adapter, when I want to administer them trough a browser?
Sometimes I can find the Ip-number in the logfiles, but I guess there is a more easy way.

There used to be a DHCP-contrib, but how do I do whitout the contrib?
How do I ”see” whats on the network?

Thanx in advance

Petur

They probably all have it's own MAC address (apart from the printer maybe). If they have a mac address you can easily fix there IP by adding it per server-manager's option 'hostnames and addresses' (at least it does for me in server-gateway mode, maybe this will also work in gateway mode):
[list=1]
  • Click 'Add hostname'
  • Enter the hostname and choose the domain, set the location to local
  • Choose 'Next'
  • Enter the lcoal IP (choose one in the fixed range, outside of the DHCP scope as defined when installing the server (if you can't remember you can review it under the opttion 'Review configuration'in the server m,anager) and enter the ethernet/MAC address of the PC, printer etc.
  • Click 'Next
  • The data entered will be displayed, click 'Save' when this is OK'.[/list:o]

This is handy little tool which I use a fair bit as a sysadmin:

http://www.famatech.com/products/utilities/ipscanner.php

Let's you do a scan of a particular subnet (really just a whole series of pings) and reports which IP addresses are "alive"

I think he wants to do what I'm wanting to do (without going to the trouble of digging through dhcpd logs):  show a list of all devices attached on the network that currently have a dhcp lease (ie, wireless or wired).

Is there something we're missing?  I thought that I used to use this all the time back in a previous release, but I'm not seeing it.  It would certainly be useful versus scanning my network each time I wish to find dhcp leases.

If that is the case why not use the sme7admin contrib. In this thread it is stated that this contrib will display a list of dhcp.

Sme7Admin can be found here: http://sme.firewall-services.com/spip.php?rubrique4

Thanks for that note.  I already had sme7admin installed, however I did not see that feature (had to click on the dhcpd service link).

Any other recommendations for contributions and their purposes for SME Server?  Seems that we have to dig much of the time for our desired add-ons.
