SME 7 General Info Questions
« on: October 11, 2006, 06:05:47 AM »
Hello All,

I just downloaded the SME 7 iso and burned it to CD. I have installed it on a Gateway Server (E-4400). The installation went fine and all questions were answered ok. The system is running ok.

My question is this: Does SME 7 have a GUI interface and if so were is it and how do I get to it. I see that it is loading a run level 7 which right now is all command code. Same after login as root.

Also is there any type of documentation or guides available to download for Linux rookies such as myself to refer back to when needed.

Any help and information will be greatly appreciated. I am excited to see this work and maybe get rid of my Windoze 2003 Server.

Thanks in advance,

CrimsonJammer

Check the sme server inc site link at the top of this forum page. Look for link to the manual and also to the dev guide. Also look at the Archived Wiki link for details too.

You can access server manager in text mode by logging in as root then typing console and then selecting server manager.
Alternatively log in as admin and select server manager

You should initially log in as admin and run Configure this server to make any required configurations to suit your location.

You then can access the GUI server manager by:
Connect to your server via the network and then access using
https://servername/server-manager
or
https://www.yourdomain/server-manager

Login to server GUI by servername does not work anymore (=>7.1.1).
Use https://www.yourdomain.xxx/server-manager
or https://ip-of-your-server/server-manager

This is not true. It works on my server (7.1.2) and there has been a bug report so this sohuld be fixed if it's not already.
"It should just work" if it doesn't report it. Thanks!

Jupp, it seems to be fixed now, at least from v7.1.3.
Related to Bug#2402

DSL Host Name Resolution...
« Reply #5 on: April 05, 2007, 10:14:09 PM »
Yes, there as a confirmed bug which has been alievated, however, we have found with a couple of test servers (server only mode) connected to dsl the resolution problem still exists.

** This is not a bug with SME Server ** - rather a problem with reverse dns lookup through the dsl modem/router. The modem/router firware (on actiontec, 2-wire and zoom modem/routers) do not allow caching or forwarding of the routing information for the local network and will not route hostname properly.

When one types "hostname/server-manger" it will not register unless there is a hosts file created on each windows machine on the network telling of the specific host information.

By moving these test machines to a dedicated connection (adsl and cable) the problem goes away. Since setting these test machines up in server/gateway mode is next to impossible because of the phone jack connection the hosts file seems to be an adequate workaround.
