Newbie needs help - please!
« on: February 10, 2002, 03:16:59 PM »
1. e-smith 4.1 gateway & server
2. ISP : Telstra (Australia) on an ADSL connection.
3. Dynamic IP (DHCP connection)
4. virtual domain email (me@domain.com.au) going to Telstra POP box(myname@bigpond.net.au)
5. email retrival is Multi-drop, and POP username and password are correct

Problem:
e-smith is not picking up email, and is not reporting anything wrong - suggestions greatly appreciated,

Cheers,
Richard

Hi,

Can you access/ping the internet?

Assuming your Internet connecting works, have you checked mail for the admin account. Is it all going there?

Is your e-smith box named the same as your domain name? Mine was and it was causing some kind of loop.

A better fix is to forget the multi-drop setup. Setup your DNS by someone like DNS2go or Zoneedit (or any of the 4 supported by e-smith in their later releases)and use a dynamic DNS client This way you can use the standard mail setup. Both services are free, with some restrictions. You will love it.

Lets assume you get the multi-drop setup working. Your next post will probably be "why don't I get blind copy mail and why is mail to me from a distribution list bounced"? At least mine was.

Charlie,

Sorry, but I have to politely disagree.  Telstra ADSL is set-up so that the client IP number changes several times a day.  I think Richard may find more heartache in trying to have his mail sent directly to him.

With Telstra cable you can keep an IP address for years, but with ADSL it changes VERY frequently and tends to have lapses of service.  One of my clients has it and I used to get multiple calls a day from him wanting to know why he was not getting to the Internet.

Just a thought based on a bit of observations.... :}

Sorry - some more information.

The connection to the ISP is a dynamically assigned IP that stays static for the lifetime of the connection.

I've given the e-smith box the name "gateway" with the domain (mydomain.com.au) being the same as the virtual domain that Telstra is hosting for us.

I don't have access to the DNS records, so I can't use any of the dynamic DNS services.

I can see the mail waiting in the POP box (through a Telstra web mail interface).

Help please...

Bobby

Richard,

If you have not sorted this, mail me.  I am happy to help you sort it out, though I am in the middle of a project today and will not be keeping a close eye on this board....However, my mail is always going.

Hi Richard,
Silly question, but did you remember to append @bigpond (or whatever they are using now) to the end of your pop username? I'm not sure whether they are still using that system or not now. I've been caught out by that before.

The server is connecting.  The mail is being dumped in the POP box at Telstra (I can see it through a web interface) - the e-emith server just doesn't seem to want to POP it.

BTW Telstra ADSL doesn't use the proprietry heartbeat that Telstra cable uses.

My box is named gateway.client.com.au, and the mail is going to client@bigpond.net.au and is being POPed from pop-server.vic.bigpond.net.au

Any ideas - please.

Cheers,
Richard

Ok - all is fine now.  I had the IP address of the POP server in the email retrival.  Removing these entries (leaving them blank) turned everything on - everything works!

Cheers and thanks for all your help.
