Restoring backup from SME7.0 server to another SME7.0 server
« on: October 17, 2006, 04:26:29 AM »
I've created a backup from my SME7.0 server and tried to restore it into SME7.0 new server using the server-manager but after reboot, my new server's telling that:

***********Inconsistent Syste State Detected**********

The restoration of system backup was running and incomplete at the time of reboot. The system should not be used in this state.

What should I do?

By the way, I can successfully see /etc/smbpasswd at the bottom before rebooting but I didn't see any message saying that the restore is successful. Do I need to use IE? It doesn't seem to be a browser issue right?

As you can see successfully /etc/smbpasswd just after that it will show in bold restore complete or restore failed.

If it's done the restore complete, it looks like you just need to run...

Code: [Select]
signal-event post-upgrade; signal-event reboot

Same issue...
« Reply #4 on: February 19, 2007, 06:55:38 PM »
I'm getting this same issue and even after I run the commands to reboot the system it still has that message. There was no 'restore complete' at the end, but it did show that it restored /etc/smbpasswd.

It also states to "Consult the User Guide for further instructions".  I've got the user guide but this error isn't listed anywhere.  Do a search in the Admin Guide and the Users Guide for 'inconsistent' and you'll get nothing. http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:Administration_Manual:Booklet and http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:User_Manual:Booklet

I'm going to wipe the system and make another go at it with another fresh install.  My backup size is 1.8GB (since there is a 2GB limit).

Are there any suggestions to repair this should it happen again?

Again...

Okay, this time I installed SME 7.1, right after install I did the restore and now it's sitting with the last line of: /etc/smbpasswd.  And there it sits.  For the past 4 hours. Nothing.  No "Restore Complete", no "Restore Failed", nothing.

This is the same spot that is was at when I ran:
Code: [Select]
signal-event post-upgrade; signal-event reboot

Then got the: *******Inconsistent System State Detected********** message.

So, now what? Any suggestions?

You should report a problem via the Bug Tracker.

You should report a problem via the Bug Tracker.

I don't think this is particularly complete advice.

Sure, for long term benefit the poster should use the Bug Tracker, but he would still be left with a broken server for an indeterminate length of time.  Today, he is primarily looking at a busted server asking for advice how to get it back on-line presumably before his clients start complaining, not in resolving a bug in SME.

If you still have access to the source server, I think you should install the dar backup contribution.  See See http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=34187.0 and make a fresh backup.  I have used this contrib successfully in 7.1 and it seems that your backup set is close enough to the 2GB limit that size may be the critical issue in your case.

This advice is general rule for any part of the SME Server having a potential bug.

Because of the core dev's living in different time zones and a few voluntees helping on bug tracker any potential fix is normally found. The problem is people post here and quite possible get a fix but never report to bug tracker so the next person who comes along has this problem and posts to forum asking for help with what seems a potential bug then we keep going round in circle's until someone does actually post to the bug tracker.

Sorry to have touched a nerve, byte.

I'm not in any way suggesting that people don't follow the general advice:  agreed, we should post bugs to the bug tracker.  What I'm saying is that in addition to reminding folk to post bugs, it may well meet their immediate needs to offer some suggestions for workarounds too.  Having a server off-line is a time-sensitive issue.

In this particular case, where  it looks like the OP is using the severely limited core SME backup program, I think it is helpful to suggest that much better solutions exist.  The wiki has recently been edited to include this advice.

David.

I think if you do that people might not to post a bug if someone offers a workaround here therefore getting lost in the forums.

Anyway lets get back on topic here  :D

veoroj & Hummdis

Did you Verify your backup file immediately after the backup completed, to prove the file was good ? This is essential to do this if you want reliable restores. You could also try a different browser than IE.

Same problem here ... did someone fill a bug report ? if so could you give a number or a link ?

I've found a workaround (my backup is verified).
After the ***********Inconsistent Syste State Detected**********
hit "next"
When it asks if you want to reboot, hit "no", it will then continue with the reconfiguration, and proceed with booting.
Everything is restored and working ...
Unix is user friendly - it's just selective about who its friends are !

Well, that would be *another* bug. It shouldn't do that. The "inconsistent System State Detected" message is intended to stop people from thinking that their restore was complete when it actually wasn't.

Please report both the original problem and the fact that you found a workaround to the Bug Tracker.

Thanks.
