What's the best network settings?
« on: October 19, 2006, 02:36:48 PM »
Hi,

I'm using my SME as a web and mailserver, set up as "Server and Gateway", so it is functioning as a DHCP server for my local network. My local network includes 3 pc's (2 wireless), 1 printserver, 1 HD-station and a wireless IP-phone. My network settinks look like this:

Internet > ADSL-modem > SME > WAP/Switch > All my other stuff

But is this the best setting? Should it be like this:

Internet > ADSL-modem > Router > SME and all my other stuff?

How should it be set up?

/Carl

SME server includes a router, which works just fine.

I agree.

I only use routers when I have to add to some client network (in a cost-efective manner) services like VLAN (virtual lans), QoS (quality of service), VoIP, LAN-to-LAN IPSec VPN, etc... You can obviously implement this using GNU specific software but I rather prefer to buy an all-in-one box (aka a router).

If you don't need these extra features, SME is a fine router.

I agree with You both - SME is a very good router. My problem is that it's terrible at managing QoS (maybe it's just me ;) ), wich I would like very much for my IP-phone!

Or you can plug an ordinary phone device to a FXS port from a VoIP + QoS enabled router, before your gateway (SME Server).

Have you tried this for QOS

http://web.inter.nl.net/users/hanscees/sme7/wondershaperbeefedup.html

I run it here at work as well as at home and seems to work well.

At home I run voip and I have no problems ... even when downloading large files.

Tib
