How can I keep the installation at a 586.  The Via C3 processor incorrectly identifies itself as 686 compatible so SME Server installs the 686-smp kernel at the first upgrade at which time the system is no longer bootable after uncompressing the kernel.  Curiously Centos 4.3 and 4.4 do not have this problem when used alone.

It is not a bug and when a non-snob from SME answered my question they were polite, a word you probably don't know.  Elitist know-it-alls like you are the biggest problem when trying to convince people to use Linux because as soon as they start they run into someone of your ilk.  The real answer to the question as sent from SME follows.

In order to install on i586 machines you will need to do the following:
   1) Press shift while booting to get the boot menu
   2) Type "smei586" at the boot prompt

I thought that was for an initial install and subsequent updates via yum would retain the i586 kernel.

Does anyone know if the new Via C7 is a true 686?

It is not a bug ...

If upgrades work correctly with CentOS and not with SME then it is a bug. Please report via the Bug Tracker.
