rc1 to Final Update - Any Gotchas?
« on: October 30, 2006, 01:52:09 PM »
I have a relatively fresh and working install of SME7.0rc1 with 100 accounts and mail transferred (by hand!) from SME5.5

I also have uservacation, userpanel and userpanels installed.

I should like to upgrade to SME 7 final and intend to do so by issueing the command "yum update" using putty.

yum list shows a lot of updates available for SMEOS and SMEUpdate, and so will probably do it overnight.

Firstly, is this okay or am I likely to run into problems?  Secondly, should I remove the uservacation, userpanel and userpanels before upgrading.

Cheers

Paul

Official developer policy was that upgrades from pre release versions was not supported, and no help would necessarily be given.
Having said that many people have done this without problem so it should work OK.
If your contribs are compatible with the final release it's OK to leave them installed.

Wouldn't hurt to do a backup immediately before the upgrade, though

For "backups as standard", I get red text in server-manager telling me I have too much data.  So we all need to do a non-standard thing and install a contrib.  Backup2 is well commented on in these forums, and I use it daily without issues.  But I think this is an area where SME "out-of-the-box" could be more intuitive and informative.  There is no guidance in server-manager panel. Currently, we require new users to recognise there is a backup issue, come here, search and learn, then install additional software.

OK, I know I am deliberately twisting your comment, but I've read more than a few tales of woe in these forums from folk without recent backups :-(

The default backup to desktop is a carry over from much earlier versions of sme eg 3 & 4, where it was possible in those days to backup your whole server to desktop, due to the limited size hard disks of tha era.

At least with sme7 you do get a warning, whereas there was no warning with earlier versions.

There has been a lot of work on improving the backup functionality in sme, problem has been that most of the add on contribs used non GPL software eg users of backup2ws & backup2 are legally required to pay a licencing fee for the use of the rar program.
That's a primary reason why that contrib has not been included in the base code, as I understand it.

I see work being done on integrating dar into sme & also Darrell May has replaced backup 2 with backup-dar.

As dar is GPL (as I read it), that may well become the standard with sme in a future point release.

dar is a shell command that backs up directory trees and files. It has been tested under Linux, Windows, Solaris, FreeBSD, NetBSD, MacOS X and several other systems, it is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Since version 2.0.0 an Application Interface (API) is available, opening the way for external/independent Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) like kdar. This API relies on the libdar library, which is the core part of DAR programs; as such, the API is released under the GPL. Consequently, to use the API, your program must be released under the GPL as well.

From here.

William
