SME Server v7.0 and Netgear WG311 v3 (Wireless Network Card)
« on: September 26, 2006, 03:55:16 AM »
Hi

I want to install a Netgear WG311 v3 (Wireless Network Card http://www.netgear.com.au/products/prod_details.asp?prodID=632) into my SME Server v7.0.

My question is, can I set it up as a gateway for the wireless network and access as if it was a normal LAN card?
Can it then operate as part of the exsisting LAN and IP addresses or a new network?

I want to replace my wireless gateway to keep my internal network(s) together.

I have already done some research and only ask questions if I still can't work it out.

Why wouldn't you put a normal network card into the server and plug it into the wirless router. That way you don't have to stuff arround trying to compile etc and then try and setup the security side of things.

All other pc's etc can then either plug into the router or connect through wireless.

Thats the way I have had it setup for years at my place and has been working very well ... you can even connect diff subnets etc if you require.

Had my neighbour also connected to my network using this method for a while.

Regards,

Tib

Aren't there routers which have options for both wired and wireless access? Problem with a wireless NIC is that you cannot apply security esstings like in the router (encryption, access control based on MAC address), you will have to implement and code this yourself probably.

I know this is an old topic, but have you been able to get the wireless NIC working?

In theory it is possible, but IMO there is no way that it is worth doing. A wireless LAN on the router is inexpensive, easy to set up and reliable. Just be sure to enable encryption and mac filtering on the router.

To be honest with you, I'm trying to get away from all the devices on my desk, which is small & my home office is small as well :)

I currently have:

1x ADSL router
1x SME server
1x 8 port 10/100 switch
3x PC's with LCD monitors
1x printer
1x 4 port KVM
1x USB memory card reader
2x Digital camera USB cables (1 on each PC)
1x cellphone USB cable
1x iPod USB cable
1x GPS USB cable
2x 2.1 speaker sets
3x UPS

Then I often need to work with client PC's, which need to connect more power cables & LAN cables

So, if I could take out the 8 port switch & 5 - 8 LAN cables, it would help a lot :)
