WinXp no server connection and also lose the internet connection

I have are problem....

I use SME 7.0 as server/gateway.

All is fine on my Ubuntu and Win98 machine.

But my 2 winxp loos the connection to the internet and the winxp can not access the ibays.. Only via SSH like WINscp...

I can access the server manager via the WinXp, but only that.

I can see, that some one, are working whit the Win reg. But i am very uncertain what, that is the right thing to do..

Plz help

Is this a new problem? Have the machines been working OK and then developed this?

Is the SME a domain controller?

Are you using DHCP or assigning Static IP's?

If the SME is setup as the DHCP server, on the XP machine from a command prompt type <ipconfig /renew> and see if the machine works after that.

In <My Network Places - View Workgroup Computers> on the XP machine(s) can you see the 98 machine?

Some thoughts:

1. I don't think you need to do anything with the registry unless you are using SME as a domain controller.

2. I think the problem is with WinXP setup as I have SME on a network with XP machines, Win98 Machines Win SBS 2003 running terminals, etc and all work fine.

3. You could try setting the WinXP to obtain an IP automatically and then go into command prompt and type <ipconfig /all> and see if it is obtaining a correct address.

4. You say loose connection to the internet...... do you initially have connection on the XP machine and then loose it?

The winxp is obtain are IP. I try ipconfig /renew and then see what happing...

i can surf on the net, and then just lose it.

I think you maybe have right, that it is something whit the network seatnings on the WinXp box..

But i can not finde the error

More.........

1. check the workgroup setting on Winxp. I know the default 98 install was Workgroup and the default Winxp home setting is MShome. (this might be the problem with not seeing the box but shouldn't be the problem with the internet.)

2. After you loose internet connection can you ping www.google.com? What about the internal SME IP address?

It is the same workgroup.

The internet connection sea to stable. I still hve are connection. And have not lose it, since i was working on it last day.

First i was using the winxplogon from the server. and then I realease the IP  adress

The only problem now, it to get assess to the share on the server.

I can get access via are ssh client, (WINscp) but it will be nice to have the s networks share.

I see you have a Win SBS 2003 as well..without knowing how its setup do you have DHCP server running on just the SME Server? or on the Win SBS 2003 server as well?

Also when you setup the "workgroups" in the server manager panel did you set "yes" for your SME Server to be the Master domain/workgroup controller?

Last thing I would check is faulty switch/cable/card are the problem

byte,

We have an interesting combination here. We have two seperate businesses running on the same network. One business is running Novell the other MS. We share printers and the internet connection between us. We have MS SBS set up as the DHCP server and also the Primary Domain Controller (it is picky about this). The SME is the web and e-mail server and also the generic shared fileserver between the two businesses. (We have a share that we use for network documentation, patches, installs, etc.) The SME is not part of the domain and the shares are either used as just peer-peer type shares or mapped by the users. Only the network admins and some of the other IT people use this so ease of use and automatic mapping are not an issue.

(I just mentioned the fact that we had all these platforms to establish that all these platforms work with SME without modification of registry, etc. as long as you are not trying to use as part of the domain.)

I have tjek, all thing. And all so have one off the WinXp on my freinds local network,. Just to test it. And there all thing was fine.

He just have 3 machines whit winXP. And all thing was fine.

I can ping the server, accesse server-manager, but not get access to all the ibays. Only whit are ssh progrm.

The Sme is running as are domane/workgroup controller.

If you set up SME as a domain controller we have a whole new list of things to work on.

Have you joined the XP machine to the domain?

Your Win98 machines treat domains much differently then the WinXP machines do. Are you sure a domain is what you want?

It sounds like what you are actually after is a share you can browse to with Network Neighborhood. I would suggest that just for a test set the Workgroup and Domain controller in the Workgroup user manager panel to NO. Then see if you can browse to the share.  This may give you the functionality you want.

If you want a domain (with a single central login that can be used to login to any of your machines) you will need to apply the registry patch and maybe spend some time on this thread.
