SME Domain / Windows Remote Profiles
« on: November 27, 2006, 05:03:47 PM »
All,

I want to thank everyone in advance for all the assistance that has been given not only to me, but also to others. This community is truly helpful in using and administering SME severs.

I have been running SME for a school district for several years now. Due to NH education laws that have been implemented, it now becomes apparent that every child in our middle school will have to have a login in next year.

We use Windows 2000/XP as our clients. Unfortunately, we must continue to do so due to software the higher ups have committed to using for evaluative testing. This is not going to change anytime soon.

What I am asking is some direction in setting up the Windows 2000/XP machines to use remote profiles so that the children can log onto any machine within the school and have their files accessible from any machine. I have not yet found a How-to or post that solves my issue. I believe that is partly due to the way our domain is set up. Not absolutely sure about it, but as I stated, I am not knowledgeable in this.

We due to existing limitations, connect to the Internet via a residential Comcast cable modem. We utilize zonedit.com to point to our residential modem. This is a PITA because I have yet to be able to have a working SSL certificate. This is hopefully going to be addressed as we move into out new $18 million school next year.

Anyway, this is my dilemma, I appreciate all responses.

Best regards,
grattman

Fast notes I made about this, I do not use it...
-Enabling roaming profile should work out of the box
-OR my documents can be remapped in property ... target - folder redirection
-start menu may also be mapped in XP. check WIN2K

Best is to have identical hardware on all PCs I believe,  it can get tricky.
Folder redirection and running programs from the network without roaming may be a good compromise. Have a look at this thread:

Note Charlie Brady's comments, food for thoughts.
Hope it helps and get you started.

If it does not work out of the box, please fill in a Bug Report @ Bugzilla (http://bugs.contribs.org)  - check: http://wiki.contribs.org/Bugzilla_Help .  Thanks.
