E-Smith & Local Backup ??
« on: February 14, 2000, 12:02:06 AM »
Is there any software to get E-smith to backup locally?

I'm running 4 alpha on a box with a 20 Gb HDD and I would like to be able to back it up....

I have a DLT drive but I'm wondering if there is a (relatively) easy way to back it up.

Any RPMs for backup software???

I'm a newbie Linux user so go easy on me :)

Thanks...

If you have no objection to the traditional ways of doing things in Linux/Unix, you might grab a basic Linux book -- something like Linux For Dummies -- there are other books as well, and scope out "tar."

I'd grab a copy of taper from the Linux CD.
That will take care of the backups.
You can also go with a commercial piece of software, but taper is doing a good job for me.  mind you I am using it on another server that backs up the E-smith server.  Connecting through NFS, which is only enabled on the inside NIC.  Be sure not to allow anything in from the outside connection to NFS.

Hi,

You might want to take a look at BRU. (www.estinc.com) Although it's a commercial product,
they also have a "Personal edition" for non-commercial use, which comes at a reduced fee.
You can download a 30 days-trail from their website.

It's really very easy to set up Bru with an e-smith server: install the rpm, configure your tape
device (good examples and good manual from Bru!) and add a job to cron (well, to the template file for cron to be exact)

good luck.
