100 % CPU Usage & LPD Daemon

Firstly I must say this is an awesome product and virtually meets all my requirements except for 1 major problem.... 100% CPU Usage

Stock standard SME 7 install with all updates installed.
SME7Admin panel installed.

Using 'top' I saw that CPU usage was being hogged by the LP daemon (LPD). 2 services with +/- 50% used by each.

Using 'service lpd stop' and running 'top' again, CPU usage now extremely low.

Therefore I think there could be a problem with the LPD service. Maybe a tweak I can use ? .... or an alternative that is not resource hungry?

One of the major needs for this installation is for a printer server for a client. I have been trying to convert this client to the benefits of Linux as a server away from other products and would like to reccomend this solution.

Hardware : (Test/Demo rig)
RAM : 768Mb (3*256Mb)
CPU : 950 Mhz Celeron
NIC : 1 x Intel 1Gb/s, 1 x D-Link 100Mb/s
HDD : 15Gb Western Digital (UDMA 66)

I have included links to images captured from the SME7Admin module and you will be blown away, as I was by the drop in CPU usage !!!!!!
(The first slight drop was after stopping all the 'clam' services'

Can I uninstall LPD in favour of CUPS ?

Would CUPS resolve this high CPU load ?

I am a Linux newbie, so please be gentle with me.

Kinds regards

Yes, you can uninstall LPD and use CUPS. Have a good read here, thanks to Robert van der Aker: http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs//rvandenaker/testing/smeserver-cups/documentation/howtos/

Thanks for the link  :D .

Saw that How-to listed elsewhere and had a sneaky feeling that would solve the issue.

I will try it and let you guys know what happens.

Please report all problems via the Bug Tracker.

Being a newbie to Linux, I dont know if this a bug or possibly some configuring required on my part due to my inexperience.

I was hoping that after some feedback, from others possibly experiencing the same problem, with advice of what to configure would resolve the problem.

I think the second response to my query being to report it as a bug is a bit premature.

I dont know if its a bug, nobody yet has said they are experiencing the same situation.

By me removing the LPD daemon in favour of installing CUPS doesn't really mean this is a bug.

As I said ........   a bit premature perhaps  :?:

A process consuming 100% is always wrong, and the server manager should not allow you to misconfigure anything.
