Topic: SME7.0 Network Performance issue

Download speed is below 1kb and haven't been able to find problem

Tried diff nic's realtek, intel, 3com, netgear ga311 gbit.

Had problems with all nic's detecting.

It's an older Tyan Tiger 100 w/daul PIII.

Ran single and daul mode no change.

All other systems 6-7mbit D/L.

Just can't figure what's going on w/sme 7.0 w/yum to date.

Any ideas / suggestions??

Four things in the past that have given be problems in the past.

1-Bad cable.  Have you tried different cables?
2-Bad hub.  Have you tried a different hub?
3-PCI conflict.  Have you tried moving the nic card to a different PCI slot?  Read the MB manual and make sure the slot you are using is not shared with another used slot.
4-Nic having problems in "Full Duplex".  Have you tried forcing the nic to "Half Duplex"?

Yea .....it's probably in h/d didn't even think of that.

Don't know why all the nics I've tried would have been stuck in h/d.

Humm..

How can I check and/or force it to f/d.

Currently have a Netgear ga311 gigabit in it.

The other question is are the nic types supposted to show in admin/config.

The GA311 has been reported to work AND not to work.  I'll bet they use different chipsets on the same model and some work and others don't.

Question:  When you change the nic card in the machine, do you reboot and go the "configure this server" in the admin console?

If not, then the driver is not getting updated and it won't work.  Read this bug report for some background (this bug specificaly names the GA311) http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1696

Also, to see the nic installed try:
# lspci
# config show InternalInterface

Found the problem

GA311 is a gbit card and the driver seems to work fine at this moment.

Here's the problem.

As far as I can tell the card is not setup to auto-negotiate speed.

I had it plugged into my 100t switch and performance was < 1kb.

Plugged it into my gbit switch 5-7mbit d/l.

So the question is how to set the card for auto-negotiate.

Well another test here...plugged the internal network back into the
100T switch.....detected correctly but....

Download:    116,472 bps
Upload:    622,552 bps

That's funny U/L is faster than D/L....

Looks more & more like a driver not working quite right.

Who made your gigabit switch?

I ran into a 10/100/1000 switch recently that wouldn't work if *any* non-gigabit device was connected.  As long as all devices were gigabit all was OK; not right away but soon after connecting any device at less than gigabit the network throughput would drop to the 100Kbit range -- and this was local workstation-to-server traffic!  (Sorry, I'm unsure of the make/model of this gem)

Got them on the old auction site ebay.

NetSmear needs to fix a lot of stuff (firmware) but they just
don't have anyone with a brain there.

Sure will do that if the switch is not setup correctly.

Does it have a webadmin...it should have one?

If so.... set the ports to auto-negotiate

Probably ports are set to 1000 so connecting 10/100T will borke it
if a port doesn't detect speed correctly.

Don't have model # for it... then open the puppy up and have a look
see inside for evidence.
