Windows98 and SME 7.1rc1

Dear all,

I've just set up an SME server and I run into the following problems:

Windows 2000 users need to have a password when they want to be able to log onto SME. Is it the same for Windows XP users and why is it like that?

Is there a trick to enable my last Windows98 pc to connect to SME server as well? There used to be a registery hack, but is it working for version 7.1rc1 as well and where can I find it?

I don't think this is a bug, I think this is a Windows feature...

Thanks for reading,
....Lutz

Windows 2000 & XP share similar security models, which is much stricter than Win 98.
SME requires Windows users to login with a valid sme server user account & password to have "automatic" access to network resources such as ibays & printers.
It is like this for security reasons, so that you can control who gets access to what on your network.

Behind the scenes you can configure guest access to resources by editing custom templates.

The registry commands are at /home/e-smith/files/server-resources/regedit
or via browser
http://www.yourdomain/server-resources/regedit/
(the last slash is required)
They are entries that are required to disable Microsoft features in Windows that are not available on sme, so you need to run the regedit entries on every Windows workstation and update the Windows registry. You can do this on each Windows machine by doubleclicking the registry fix file.

Actually the scripts work fine on Windows 98, ME, and XP. But somehow I cannot enter my server from Windows 2000. It only works for users that have logged in with a password to Windows 2000. Any further ideas?

Kind regards,
