Roadmap?
« on: January 05, 2007, 12:57:43 PM »
Hi

I have search around on the forum and look at smeserver.org but does the project not have a roadmap and what the developers right now are working on (like clarkc***** have)?

There is no roadmap. I would like to have one, but  to do so we would need to have committed resources and funding. The developers are doing the work in their own time. The level of donations is appalling, despite a request for donations on each server-manager front page (and yes, the web sites need to be improved, which isn't helping matters).

So how do we overcome this?  For me, this is the first open source project I have ever been involved with, and I imagine it's the same for a lot others.  I don't make a living off of this distro, although I would like to start bringing in some income with it, so I do what I can in my spare and sometime not so spare time because I enjoy it.  But, that doesn't help the funding issue.  I wouldn't even mind donating $100 a year to the cause, but could we get a fair amount of people to do that?  Also, how much would that help in the hosting costs?  I don't believe the hosting of the websites has been donated, so someone is paying for that.

Maybe we have unsupported (like we do now) volunteer free forums, and supported ($$) forums to bring in something for the distro.  Again though, how many people would pay for that and how would it be staffed?  You could move to a bounty system for all of the NFR's in the bug tracker.  Many requests come in, but little in return from the requester.  Just thoughts.

I've looked at the C-Connect website too and see they are pretty well established and wonder why we can't be like or strive towards being that as well.

My small rant is over,

John Bennett
