Problem accessing internet with server
« on: January 13, 2007, 01:29:37 AM »
Hi,

For some strange reason I seem to be having huge problems my SME Server accessin the internet when it is in server gateway mode.

I have recently got a new router and it happened with the change, but I have checked over and over but the settings seem to be identicle.

When the server is in server mode only it works the internet works fine. but when its server and gateway they do not?

It uses the same network card btw for both modes. The router works perfectly fine for everything else just not that.

Hopefully someone can shed some light into the problem.

Thanks
Adam

You should set your router/modem to bridged mode and disable DHCP and allow sme server gateway to do those functions ie enable DHCP during the console confgure stage (log in as admin).

Any ideas on either why my router is doing it or how to set it to half bribge mode (i have googled it tna).

I also have NAT on because when i turn it off my internet goes down completly to all computers

Did you look at page 12 and 15 of your manual ?

Quote from: "Linksys Manual"
Bridge Mode Only
If you are using your Gateway as a bridge, which makes the Gateway act like a stand-alone modem, select
Bridge Mode Only. All NAT and routing settings are disabled in this mode.

Hi william,

Sorry I did not get a manual for it and didn't think about checking it online.

I did notice that and I changed it but when I did my internet would not connected at all. The internet light on the router just went red.

Do you reckon I need anything additional? Or anyother ideas?

Thanks

I'm not a ADSL person more a cable person :)

Do you have to set a username/password in SME (server console) when using bridge mode?

Maybe someone else can answer this.

EDIT: just looked. Login as admin and configure your server. On the External Interface Configuration page select PPPoE.

William

You do need to enter your ADSL user name and password and type of connection (usually PPPoE) in the sme server console, rather than in the router (as before).

Give it ago and see what happens.

If no luck, try RFC 1483 Bridged mode.

Hi k0r54,

Some one will correct me if I am wrong but I don't think SME supports PPPoA   I have a number of mates in the UK that I have introduced to SME and they (we) have never got PPPoA working on any version of SME   The only answer we have found is to add the SME server in the routers DMZ so all traffic is forwarded to the server but this would mean you having to have either a different router because you probably use the wireless on your existing router and put your router behind it or put a WAP in place of it. So to recap:
Router
|
|
|
SME Server in Server/Gateway (set to dedicated, DHCP use MAC address, using the first NIC) in DMZ
|
|
|
Switch/Hub - connected to SME's second NIC
|
|
|
WAP (or existing router) and all PC's connected to the hub

This works fine for my mates with PPPoA ADSL The best router we have found is the BT Voyager 220v, simple to set up and works :D It can be found here: http://www.shop.bt.com/invt/car116
Other  bT routers to consider can be found here: http://www.voyager.bt.com/wired_routers/wired_index.htm Of course there are plenty of others from Linksys and Netgear.
Hope this helps.

Regards,
Del

Hi,

Thanks for all your help, unfortunatly all to no avail.

I have tried it all. I think the router is missing the vital drop down of "half-bridge". I have looked for a firmware update but no luck.

Have googled it but no-one with my router is trying to connect to a server apparently  :?

Any more idea's

Thanks

Ok after calling linksys "not so technical support" they said it doesn't support half bridging.

Any other ways around this?

Thanks

In what way does it "not work"?

It uses the same network card btw for both modes.

This doesn't make sense. In server only mode, you use one network card. In server and gateway, it uses two network cards.

Hi,

Firstly when the server is in server mode only the internet works but is server gateway the server does not work at all.

And what I mean by the nics is that the card i use for external interface in server gateway is the card i use for server mode, it elimiates the network as the problem.

Thanks

What do you mean by "does not work at all"?
