NEW Hardware Question
« on: January 16, 2007, 12:03:45 AM »
I administer an sme 7.1 server, I origionally set the server up on an older
PII 266mhz machine, due to budget constraints, I now have my budget, and have ordered my hardware, my question is can I clone the drive to the new drive, will it redetect all my hardware, or will I have to copy all ibays to new server, or will I have to start over any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Well as far as my experiences go I never had any problems if the hardware was supported.
"It should just work" if it doesn't report it. Thanks!

I was afraid, because of different cpu, ethernet cards etc. the hardware i chose is not cutting edge, p4 2.8ghz northwood processor, integrated video, lan etc, 2 320gb harddrives, 1gb ram.

I've never been sure about this with linux. In windows land it would almost be a no-no.

If it works, you may have to switch manually from a UP kernel to SMP kernel if your P4 has hyperthreading and it's enabled in the bios.

If your going to have both machines working side by side both with 7.1 then a backup/restore or copy across the data might be the go.

If you have a usb hard drive large enough, you may want to look at dar2 from Darrell May. I have used it in 911 mode to upgrade to new hardware.

I've noted that the OP is going to 2 320G drives (probably in RAID).

They could setup the new machine with one drive, use the other drive to move the data between them (Using Dar) and when all is well with the new machine rebuild the raid with the second drive.
