accessing FTP in LAn from internet through SME server ?
« on: February 20, 2002, 05:20:56 PM »
Hello,

I previously had a FTP server accessible from Internet.

I've got now a SME Server 5.1.2 as gateway and want to acces my FTP server (hosted on a station on the lan) via internet.

Is it possible to continue to access this FTP server from internet through the gateway ?

If no: just too bad...i don't have enough space on my server to host this ftp (2Gb) and my FTP is 120 Gb large....

If yes: great !! How should I proceed ?

thx

You need to setup IP Port Forwarding (see the How To's at http://myezserver.com) and you will also have to use a FTP client that supports a passive setup.  I personally use GuildFTP server on my 2K machine with 4 ports forwarded from my SME v5.1.2 box to my 2K machine.  Works great.

Darrell has changed his site around, it's taking some getting used to, here is the URL:

http://myezserver.com/downloads/mitel/contrib/portforwarding-0.0.1/

Hiya David

Just a thought one you current problem...

Make sure that in the Host Names and  Addresses  section of the SME server manager, that you have set the ftp server to local ip. If you dont, you might get people access I-Bays and user directories instead of the ftp goodies...

Hope this helps

I use "ip forwarding" to have people going to my "LAN FTP"
I use Ibays for another puroose.

in fact:
My server have 8Gb HDD.
My personnal computer 144Gb HDD.

So I use the SME server only for small ibays, and my personnal computer as a storage area accessible via FTP through the serveur (from Internet...)

I'm using IP Forwarding  to have people going on my "secondary" FTP directly with this "special" port (42)
