Adding new disk to SME 7.1 - but not RAID
« on: January 17, 2007, 03:43:06 PM »
Knowledge of Windows.... good
Knowledge of Linux - NOTHING AT ALL - do not even understand the text books...

But running SME Server 7.0 currently to host web pages and ftp...
Single 250GB hard disk

Soon to update to 7.1....and notice there is a parameter 'NORAID' on the install options - does this mean that if I put a 2nd 80GB hard disk in before the install that it would be recognised and add useful space (ie so I get a total of 330GB useable) without any other shenanigans required eg without having to enter admin (root?) mode and incant weird and wonderful but meaningless spells (to me) like 'MOUNT -prt -uy& ^ytr -upthebackend'?

And I'm just NOT interested in wasting space with RAID systems whatsoever.....

I can not tell you for sure since I have not tested in myself, but I would bet if you choose to install without RAID with 250 GB drive and an 80GB drive installed, it will ask you which drive you want to install to and it will leave the other one alone completely.
This means you would have to log in as root and provision the drive for use.
If you are not interested in learning any linux command line stuff I would recommend looking at some other distributions on www.distrowatch.com as there are many that have quite good GUI's and will help you to prepare a disk as Windows does.

Hope this helps at least a little.

Many thanks for your thoughts, harshl..

At the mo only got the 250GB drive in situ - and still loads of space so its not really an immediate issue - more a thought really for when *the time* arrives... :D

Dunno about NOT WANTING to learn Linux - got the books and every now and then I have a delve but so many parameters for most things, etc... and I've been with PCs since early 80's and done the MS-DOS command line stuff  an' all.... :( Oh well, keep reading the books I suppose and hope for that flash of inspiration - and a bit more free time to do it!

Anyway, I've found a couple of topics on here that deal with doing the 'incantations' that possibly I can follow parrot fashion - and probably start to learn Linux the way I learnt Basic (typing in the magazine listings and then debugging to make them work - and then adding/amending to make them work better! - oh those were the days! :D)

BTW - I did the SME 7.1 upgrade without any problems whatsoever...  I'd spent several hours sorting out making the backups of my data first (had problems with the Windows PC I was backing up to!) ... but they weren't needed and the upgrade itself took less than 10 minutes! :)

Anyway, thanks again...  Steve
