Microsoft Exchange Problems
« on: February 21, 2002, 12:50:52 AM »
I have have just installed SME Server V5 to act as a file server for a small network of 5 computers.  Installation was fairly straight foward and I have setup file sharing through TCP on my pc's running windows95, which works OK.

The problem is I still need to access email accounts on another bigger network via dailup networking to a microsoft exchange server.  This was all working fine until I installed the SME Server and setup file sharing through TCP.

Can anyone give me any idea why I now cannot access emails on the other windows network when i dail it up.

Did you change the domain name?

What machine is dialing up, the e-Smith?

Is the e-smith server setup for server and gateway??
Is the e-smith providing DHCP?? Is the e-smith your default gateway??
Are you dialing up from 1 machine, with a modem, to the other remote network??

If yes to these, it could be that it your 'puter is sending the traffic thru the e-smith and not thru the dial up
check the dialup connection properties, look for the tcpip properties
there should be a check box that states

'use default gateway on remote network'

check this box to send all traffic thru the dial up connection,
.

hopefully this will help

just realised I didn't explain things very clearly.  I am using the server only mode, i need to keep the e-smith server seperate, and two of the client computers have modems which are used to dailup to a remote microsoft exhange server.  e-smith is providing IP addresses automatically for each of the client machines. would it be conflicting IP addresses when i am on both networks at the same time?

A couple of ideas:

1)  Is the exchange server on the same subnet as the e-Smith (and consequently the client workstations).

2)  Does the exchange server restrict access to only certain IP numbers/ranges?

3)  Are the workstations dialing in to a NT RAS service?

If your e-smith box is giving the ip addresses, then it is the default gateway for those machines.

Definitely check to make sure all networks involved are on different subnets.

did you check the TCP/IP properties of the dialup connection like I said before??
default gateway on remote network??
