Topic: crash too many times

after my fresh smeserver installed and run well for few days,
i do update from server manager and smeserver reconfigure and restart successfully.

the updates get installed are:
rkhunter.noarch                          1.2.8-4.el4.sme        smeupdates    
spamassassin.i386                        3.1.7-36.el4.at        smeupdates

now, every day my smeserver crash and completely not responding.
screen is blank, keyboard, ping, etc... nothing responds.
the only thing i can do is turn it off and turn it on again.

this thing happen at least twice a day.

how do i troubleshoot? is it hardware or software issue??

I had the same problem. And no errors. Only black screen. And monitor didn't even respond.
It was because of high trafic trough one of my computers (torrents). I think that it had something to do with high number of connections to that computer.

I solved the problem with torrentflux. So now the server does all the work and it hadn't crashed since. But i don't know what the issue was.

What is your hardware configuration and how much memory do you have on the system?

The only time (and once only) I experienced my SME server was unresponsive was due to hardware failure. Other wise a trace can be found in the logs/dmesg or monitoring tools.

Check memory or (newly installed) hardware.

I opened a bug (2361).

my hdd suddenly undetected by bios.
i dont know if this is the cause or not.

replaced the hdd and install fresh sme7.1
not yet updated.
currently running more than 1 day and no problem (yet?)

it's old compaq with p3/500mhz/256mb
new 80gb hdd.

server only mode. so, should not have any torrent problem.

on average, cpu is <1% and about 18mb free ram and 144kb swap used.

i'll see if any problem occur before doing update.

Well if your hhd died that would be your problem.
