« on: February 21, 2002, 03:06:34 AM »
For some reason I cannot get the External IP to get it from DHCP, (Charter Bussiness services 3Com Surfboard Cable Modem) This Nic has worked fine and if we load linux it works fine but for some reason Eth1 (External) won't load DHCP under any config why? I have the latest version of SME

This nic has been on connected to your cable modem before?  Or this is a new nic of the same model but has NEVER been connnected to your cable modem before?
Some ISP's now identify by MAC address instead of client identifier (mine just switched to MAC) so if you had 1 nic connected to the ISP and switch to another nic they will refuse your DHCP request because your MAC address is not in their database.
Hope that wasn't confusing.

Yes actually this was a w2k server box with Merek Mail Server on it I thought that Linux would be better, This nic has always been registered to this address and it is the only registered static address I have, the config is as such

Eth0 - Local Lan
Eth1 - Direct to Hub

Hub "DMZ"
Port 1 Cable Modem 3Com Surfboard
Port 2 Mail Server "Static" - Basically when it requests it always gets the same address
Port 3 2Wire Home Portal "DCHP"

Hope this Helps!!!

And the NIC is listed in the Hardware Compatibility List?

Just noting your configuration....

I would recommend not plugging your "external" nic into the hub and the cable modem into the hub.  In order to have any kind of firewall security, IMHO, you need to have the world isolated from your LAN.

Can you go:
Interntet <--> Cable modem <--> e-Smith <--> Your LAN

Looks, on the surface, that the external nic may be getting a DHCP offer from your network rather than from the ISP.

NB, depending on wiring of your cable modem you may need a crossover cable to connect it directly to the nic.

Actually the problem was with my nic, the PCnet32 worked fine with Redhat 7.whatever. the problem was this card is a HPNA/ETHERNET combo and HPNA is being activated, I changed the Mac address registered with Charter (For Static) and problem solved new Nic and Bam DHCP works, Thank you very much for all of your comments I really have some sence of the Quality of people who use this product. Great Bunch of People! Thanks
