how-to suggestions?
« on: February 08, 2007, 12:48:38 AM »
I'm taking suggestions on new how-to's since everyone seemed to like my Roundcube article. What else do you guys want guides for? Gallery1/2, Jinzora, other webmail systems? Alot of stuff is available via rpm, but you may want to build from latest source, etc. I had someone asking about a Hula guide, since I have been playing with it lately.

I am by no means implying I'm a guru at this but I do have experience installing all sorts of random things on random unix/linux systems, and this is my humble way of helping out towards the cause of SME.

So, anyone?

If you have the time what we really need is a new framework for howto's
we need organisation more than new content

one item can be a generic Howto for installing applications
what you have is ok, but see the devguide and say the smeserver-joomla src rpm for how to install in /opt
search for why /opt is preferable to an ibay

phpsysinfo and a few other contribs install in ibays.

For those of us who have read the dev guide and still seem a little
**scratches head** lost on the /opt concept - a general how-to as
a guideline might be greatly helpful.

That is a good idea.

I do think how-to's are beneficial, and so are rpm's. If there is something a user wants installed on SME and there is no rpm for it already, then a universal ""how-to install XX" would be perfect.

Your site already has guides/rpm's of all the stuff I mentioned anyway.
Plus I don't want to take away any of your business(just looked at your site).

It looks like the new wiki might be ready for contribs? I hope so. I know that I get very tired of searching the forum for contribs and how-tos. Filtering by announce helps somewhat, but it would be nice to have the contrib and install information in one place without all of the discussion that follows. If someone wants to install the OpenVPn Bridge contrib, they would have to wade through 15 pages of QandA to see if there was any new directions since it was first announced. (Actually for that one, you could just go to the author's website to see the most recent directions, but I think you might be able to see my point :) )

If this wiki is indeed ready to be used, maybe some of you fine folks that have created contribs could add your directions to the wiki so everything was in one place!

I have tried to log on with the same user/pwd as I'm using here on the SME Server Forum but gets the message:
Code: [Select]
Login error:Incorrect password entered. Please try again.

Then I tried to get

access to the wiki via this link on the main page of the wiki.

Could anybody point me in the proper direction?

Btw. is there a typo here: "...and say the smeserver-joomla src rpm for how..." or is it slang (that I being a foreigner do not understand; more specific "say" and "joomla")  :?:

I would like some help with Metadot. I have written a Howto for Metadot that needs some attention with the virtual host configuration. Here some links to some notes and forums on Metadot below.

I also have some notes on b2evolution

and

Cerberus Helpdesk

The problem is putting these appz into the /opt, they are easy to install into ibays, but I have trouble with installing into /opt and creating custom template for them

Did you get any further with this? I am wading through the Developer's Guide, but finding it slow going so far. I know that there is a Site-Maker contrib (that is in the how-to category) and I haven't tried it yet, but I am also wanting to figure out how-to install to /opt in a more "manual" fashion.

I believe snoble was telling Ryan483 to look at the Joomla source .rpm to see how to install to /opt. I think the word "say" should have been "see" as in "see the smeserver-joomla src rpm for how..." (I was going to include a link to the rpm from dungog, but I don't see the source rpm files...)
Ryan

Edit: B-t-w, if you haven't done so already... You have to create a new bug in bugzilla to request access to edit the wiki. So if you don't have a bugzilla account you have to create one, then follow the link posted earlier in this tread to ask for access.

The one thing you need to install 'manually' in /opt is a template, or two.  So focus in the devguide on that portion.

Most apps come with an install README.  It will describe what needs there are besides templates (templates allow config files to 'find' your app... i.e. for apache to present the web interface of your app you need an /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf template to allow /opt to be web accessible).  The most common other requirements are a mysql database and possibly a dependancy package or two, most of which can be found in the repositories available.

Beyond that if you like you can learn about adding a config db entry or db password script.  These are also in the devguide.

I wrote a quick how to on adding windows print drivers to the default print share, but I don't have a wiki account to add it to the howto's.  Feel free to "spruce" it up a little.
