7.1 new upgrade "kernal panic - not syncing
« on: February 10, 2007, 03:14:34 PM »
Hello - I have a freshly upgraded from 7.0 to 7.1 server that has had 2 kernal panics and crashes approx 1 week appart. I believe they happened during a VPN connnection both times. the last line in the  screen that is up when it is found is:
**********************************************************
<0> kernal panic - not syncing : fail exception in interupt.
I am not sure if this is related to the problem that I have also had since the upgrade in my RAID 1 configuration.
when checking  raid status it shows the folloeing:
**********************************************************
Personalities (raid 1)
md0: active raid 1  hda1 (0) hdb1 (1) 104320 blocks (2/2) (uu)
md1: active raid 1 hda2 (0) 77754496 blocks (2/1) (u_)
md2: active raid1 hda3 (0) hdb3 (1) 264960 blocks (2/2) (u/u)
unused devices <none>
only some of the raid devices are unclean
manual intervention may be required
***********************************************************
I have done some searches on the raid issue but none seemed similar enough to follow them through. This is a production server that has been in service for approx 4 yeads and was upgraded from 6.5 to 7.0 then shortly after that 7.1 came out and that upgrad was performed.
As I stated earlier the panic seems to initiate after a vpn connection has been established - it is then lost and the machine is found down -
Any thoughts or assistance would be greatly appreciated.
DAS :(

Will try it and see what happens. If it works is there a way to make it the default start up or possibly shoulfd I turn off the HT.
System is a Dell PowerEdge 600SC, 2.4G, 512K, 533 with 512mb ram and 2 80gb drives.

Server did kernal panic on test - VPN connection lasted approx 2 min before it started. No excessive cpu usage when VPN started.
When rebooted no option screen for EL boot.
I guess it is time to try to reinstall from scratch and rebuild.

Reinstall 7.1 clean with no updates - EL or SMP
« Reply #6 on: February 26, 2007, 06:14:15 PM »
Did a fresh install on 2 new disks, restored system from scratch and when using VPN under EL there is a Kernel Panic and system fails, under the SMP kenel system allows VPN access without actual Kernal panic but the session locks and file that is being viewed shows open and unavailable. Have found sever posts on VPN issues and incorrect kernel updates.
2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp
is the current in use possibly wait for further updates?
Any thoughts?

As I have been often told, "Please raise bugs via the bug tracker".  Bug 2146 seems to have similar VPN issues on a 7.0 to 7.1 upgrade.  Maybe not kernel panics but sytem hangs.  The developers should know about this one too.

My personal experience is hardware with your error.  As Uniqsys suggested, raise a bug in the bugtracker.
