SME 7.1 as VM on WinXP
« on: February 11, 2007, 02:29:05 PM »
Hello,

My first post. There is much on the forum about running VMWare server on an SME host, but not much the other way round. I have successfully installed and can start SME as a VM, but I have no network connection.

Config settings were Ethernet:bridged (PC uses WiFi card not ethernet), server-only mode, and IP address set to various local LAN settings (192.168.1.*, including the host PC address). I also tried 127.0.0.1. I cannot even access the SME server from the localhost web-browser using https://localhost/server-manager, or https://127.0.0.1/server-manager, which is all I really need at this stage. There is also no out-going connection to contribs.org. I suspected firewall interference (ZoneAlarm), so disabled it but it didn't help.

Is what I am attempting even possible? If so what have I mis-configured.

I installed sme on vmware tools in server mode without any problems. It worked wihout any custom settings on sme or vmware from my part.
"It should just work" if it doesn't report it. Thanks!

It was just a combination of firewall, unfamiliarity - and a bit of stupidity  :)

Hi. I'm gona give it a go.

I've tried to get VMWare to work with local host without network connected to host pc, and it didn't want to work. A friend told me to setup an extra network adaptor (Network Bridge Adaptor). So that VMWare can connetct to local host UTP port. Network adaptor automatically setup and configured if you have a network connected to the host pc while loading VMWare and other VM.

Best of luck. I also first tried SME on VM to get the hang of it.
