CPU load 100%?!?!
« on: February 23, 2002, 09:55:47 PM »
Hey,

I have a slight problem: somehow the CPU-load of my server hits the roof about once every hour or so. See the the system monitor results here. I don't know how this is possible. Even when there should be NO activity at all! At night time it even goes on. At those times, there is NO client PC on, no external connections are made...
I read on another post that logging is done quite a lot, but this ain't normal.

I upgraded from 4.1.2 to 5.0 and since then and you about halfway through January. Since then you can see it displayes red graph ever since! I am using e-smith for quite a while now, and enjoy all the features! This CPU thing isn't really bothering me because I don't really notice it while using it, but I would like to know WHAT it is exactly!

Thanks in advance!

Hoi Wietse,

Type 'top' at the command prompt, take a cup of (echte) coffee, and watch.
you will see which processes use your cpu..

I have noticed this with 5.0 and the culprit seemed to be named especially when a client machine was using a samba share. It does not seem to effect 5.1.2 so I would upgrade to that and see it that also cure your problem.

OK, I would like to try that... but is it possible to get an update for this somewhere, or do I have to create another CD with the whole new image again? Thanks for these ideas!! I am still trying to figure out the problem, but no success yet!

I did not see this being fixed in updates 1-3 so I would expect the only way would be to burn a new cd of SME 5.1.2 and then do an upgrade. That is what I did and apart from the upgrade not updating the smb.conf file everything is working well.

Weird huh?
Upgrade can be done by new CD only! Not that this is such a huge prob, but it would be nicer to b able to dload some kind of upgrade package, right?
Well, I will see if it works. Thanks for the reply!
