Topic: reboot on SME5.1.2 effects the nic card in winXP machine

A problem with winXP thru newly installed SME 5.1.2
If the winXP is turned off at nite
When turned on in the morning there is no connection to the server
We are not able to ping between the computers from either end
The server stil has internet connection
But if the server is rebooted without touching the winXP computer
we find that we can ping between the computers and the winXP computer once again has access to the internet
How can rebooting the server have any effect on the nic card in the winXP computer?

I am not sure I understand your question.
The point is it takes a fresh reboot of the server in order to make the connection.

Just out of interest do things work correctly also if you reboot the Win XP boxes instead of the server?

no

that would be the same as just turning it on in the morning.
The thing that really puzzles me is that the only thing that changes on reboot of the server is the nic on the winXp can now be pinged.

I recall reading about a SME 5.1.2 SME DHCP problem that sounds just like your problem.  Search the forum for DHCP problems.  I use SME 5.1.2 w/ DHCP and 3 Win2k boxes and never had this problem.

Just for clearification
I am now not making any connections
That may be because I changed from static intranet IP's to the DHCP for local connections.
At least we could make a connection using static IP's

This problem seems to be only where we have a dynamic external IP

Another winXP machine is having no problem where there is a static external IP and static internal IP

I think we turned on the DHCP on the 1st install and then went to static, so I am going to reinstall 5.1.2 w/o DHPC and see if that makes any diff.

OK
Completed the fresh install 5.1.2 and set up to use local IPs
connected the winXP and every thing worked.
Rebooted the winXP and now it can not find the SME.
Rebooted the SME and winXP works until the next reboot.

I give up!!

I have 10 brand new WinXP boxes and a brand spanking new SME5.1.2 server.  I haven't had the problems you are experiencing.  In fact, the plant these PC's are in had a power failure with half the users PC's being shut down.  The SME was on a battery backup and never went down.  The XP PC's came up without a problem.

I wonder if your problem could be related somehow to your network hub/switch.  It sure sounds like a MAC address is getting mangled somehow.
