Topic: DAR2 - File size limit exceeded

Hi There
I am referring to the following post:

I have not seen an answer to the problem in that post or anywhere else for that matter.

The problem happens during a DAR2 Backup and appears in the event log which is emailed to me. The total data on my SME server is only 3GB or so.

First part of the log file:

Connecting /mnt/dar2/Manual_Backup to //orbital/sme
Expanding /etc/dar2/Manual_Backup template
Expiring old backups
Executing pre-backup event
Verbose logging is on
Performing Manual_Backup backup
No terminal found for user interaction. All questions will be assumed a negative answer (less destructive choice), which most of the time will abort the program.

All seems ok there and the backups always used to work.

The file PCMag_OSReview_Nitix.pdf is only a 108Kb file.

If someone can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi Ross,

What Slice Size did you specify?

If it was greater than 2000 I believe you may get the kind of problem you are reporting.

This is just a guess on my part. Darrell may have a better answer, however.

Thanks 4 the speedy reply. Here is my setup.

File system : smbfs
Slice size : 4000
Compression : 9
Expiry : 3
Verbose : on
Backup day : *
Backup time : 23:00

I am going to change to Slice Size to 2000 and see if that makes a difference.

Reading the panel text finds your answer:

Enter the backup volume segment slices in megabytes. As an example to create 650MB volume segments for copying to CDR/RW you would enter [ 650 ]. This would create in the target files of the following format: job.yyyy.mm.dd.1.dar, job.yyyy.mm.dd.2.dar, etcetera. Note the maximum segment size is 2000MB. Total backup job size is limited only by available target free space.

Well, now I am going to have to take up Yoga... So I can kick my own A$$.  

I can't believe I did that.

Seems like the 2000 limit only really takes effect or gives an error if you actually reach that amount of data though, hmmm, interesting. Unfortunately that panel text is not available when editing an existing backup task. So I had no reason to create a new one whereby I would have seen the panel text the second time around, hopefully.

But Anyhow, lesson learned. Don't rush, think it through.
