must i enable centos and centos-update repos???
« on: March 07, 2007, 04:34:48 PM »
I never have this repos enables, and today i read the wiki and say this:

Which repositories should be enabled
You should have the following repositories enabled (blue)

CentOS
CentOS - updates
SME Server - addons
SME Server - OS
SME Server - updates.

So i must to enable those repos?
Some developer one time say me that not to enable centos and centos-update repos, so the thing change or the wiki is wrong????

I also asked this question some time ago.

You indeed need to enable all off them (excluding testing). I think the problem before was updating the kernels, in version 7.1.1 they excluded kernel versions from the centos repos. Because of this I think you can just enable the repo's like you said.

ok, but i talk with a developer 9 moths ago, so the sme 7.1 or sme 7.1.1 or 7.1.2 not exist at those time, so i really know if i must to enable those repos, but i need that a developer or an important people say me "yes" not anybody , because i use sme in production servers and i dont want problems .

In this post,

http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=35800.0

a forum moderator gave the same wiki FAQ link in answer to the same question.

Of course, you are free to enable the repositories that suit your level of caution and you may choose to run the updates later than when they first appear, to allow time for any unforseen issues to be resolved.

There were a few slight issues with the 7.1.1 update which were resolved after a couple of days with the 7.1.2 update, which is working fine for me.
I do have all the recommended repos enabled, but it takes me a few days to get around to running the updates

i have my system updated to 7.1.2 and i dont use the centos repos, i think ( if a developer dont say me that iam wrong) that the answer of that developer 9 month ago its rigth, if a use my server in production i must wait to update my sme with the sme-updates.

lucho115 you're wrong. The only problem with centOS updates was with the kernel. The command to exclude kernel was implemented in 7.1 and all the new installs have the centOS and cnetOs-updates enabled by defauls. Now it's your cohis.

Or are you so stubborn that you need to get a milion posts about how good it is to set these repos? Well enable them or don't it's your choise but just for the record your box could get hacked by your ignorance not because of centOS updates that's for sure.

Edit: And it's official. Just read other people's posts and dont be an ignorant a$$. And you can browse the bugtracker and read all the discussions about repos and why they should be enabled.
"It should just work" if it doesn't report it. Thanks!

Lucho do what you want. I really don't care. If you're stubborn you're stubborn or just plain old stupid.
What do you need a written confirmation? Ok post the adress and someone will send it to you just tell me how many signatures you have to get before you do what should be done? Will 30 be enough.

Please don't be stupid. The post from gordon was from 2006 and as i said things tend to change in the software department. So don't enable those repos. It's beter to get hacked because of ignorance.

Just so you know all the php and perl upadates (don't know exactly what) will come directly from centOS repos so if you don't upgrade then fine just don't cry if you get hacked or when you find out that you have really old software because you didn't update.

This is the last post from me because i have smarter work to do then convincing some jacka$$ to update his computer. It's yours and to with it what you please. I just hope that Bill Gates replies to you about M$ updates.

The reason you can enable base and updates is because 'dangerous' packages are now excluded.

Look at..
Code: [Select]
db yum_repositories printprop base Exclude
Code: [Select]
db yum_repositories printprop updates Exclude

The repositories have different names between the console and server-manager.

Code: [Select]
+------------------+----------------------+
|     Console      |     Server-Manager   |
+------------------+----------------------+
|   base           | CentOS - os          |
|   updates        | CentOS - updates     |
|   smeos          | SME Server - os      |
|   smeaddons      | SME Server - addons  |
|   smeupdates     | SME Server - updates |
+------------------+----------------------+
Regards,
William

IF I give advise.. It's only if it was me....
