Probably (as I'm sure has been said before). It's an untested path, however.

I thought it has been said that it should be better to upgrade to 6 and then to 7 .... I search for 5.6 in the forums and it returned 0 results...

So I asked here to be sure.

Not sure what the usage is but one of the reasons to upgrade is to get antivirus. Can't imagine that the hardware that was used for a 5.6 install is going to perform clam antivirus scan very well. My P3 866 with 384 Mb ram takes 100 minutes to do 8 Gb. There are some other posts detailing long scan times. There are probably other issues related to old/obsolete hardware that I am unaware of.

Then if you are getting better hardware you can set everything up and just copy over what you need...

The 5.6 to 6 and 6 to 7 upgrade paths have been tested. But it's more work to do it twice. I'm not aware of any technical reason that you couldn't upgrade directly from 5.6 to 7.
