Topic: New Install issues

(NEWBIE ALERT)I am trying to set up SME server as a gateway and private server.  This is my first try and after looking over SME, it seemed possible to make it happen.  I have tried searching the forums and reading the documentation (RTFM..), but still can't get up and running.
After going through the setup, I can not get any internet or lan connection in any way. Configured Gateway-->server-->switch--> pc. I thought I was following the install instructions, but obviously missed something.
The (2) network adapters are detected on startup, and I leave them "normal".  I have also tried to swap eth0 and eth1, but no good.  I use the default IP address and range.  External connection is residential DSL, so  used PPPoE, no dynamic DNS service, provide DHCP service to the local network.  Then when I login and the server console comes up, the "test internet connection" test fails.

I know I am missing something, as the instructions seem pretty straightforward.  Any suggestions?

Do you mean you have it set up as "Private server and gateway" if so I would not recommend using this as it disables all incoming services (I think there are future plans to remove the "Private server and gateway") Use "Server and gateway" and report back.

Changed to Server and Gateway, no change, still can not access internet.  Also swapped eth0 and eth1 and tried the same, still no connection.

My DSL gatewat is a Westell, connected via ethernet, not USB.  Do I still use the PPoE option, or should I have used one of the DHCP options?

You mentioned at first that you can't connect to your LAN as well correct? You talked a lot more about from the WAN side so I am curious if the LAN is still broken as well?

If it is now just the WAN connection that isn't working, did you reset your DSL modem? I have never had DSL, but my cable modem needs reset everytime a different MAC connects to it...

a fictitious example may help

your isp gives you a fixed ip of 222.222.222.222 - this is how the world sees your router - but is not used by sme.

on the internal side of the router (between the router and one of the sme nic) the router has a non-routable address of 10.0.0.1 - this is how the external side of sme talks to the router.
to be able to talk to the router this address is known as the external gateway address.  you need to setup your external ip in this range - for example 10.0.0.2

on the internal side of sme you have a different non-routable address of 192.168.0.1 - this is how your network talks to the sme.


the router ip address (not the global one but the non-routerable one) is the external gateway address in the sme config.  this can be confusing and is specifically pointed out in the sme configuration setup process.

do you have this information?  some more information would help us assist...

has your router already connected to the internet?

Use the server in server/gateway and re run the config. Then report if the LAN works and post the output of ifconfig.

Just thinking, would it make life any easier if I got a static IP?  Bellsouth does offer a static IP with an upgrade, which I have been considering anyway.

Yes and no.
You'll still have to fix the problem you have now but you won't have to mess with dydns and other things.

LAN side appears to be up after reinstalling and swapping eth0 and eth1.
Browser pointed to 192.168.126.1 reports a page "Web Site Under Construction. Still no internet, ifconfig reports-

I ave never had to restart DSL gateway since installing about 6 months ago.

Getting the LAN side working is progress (I think!).

Well one of the NIC's work.
Did you configure your internet connection correctly (did you setup pppoe)?

And please tell my what is your second nic the one that doesn't work.

Your HWaddr is the same. So try and change your second NIC.

Connection is set up as PPPoE, and both NICs are Realtek 8139 (NE2000 generic).

Well i had some problems in the past with two realtek cards so change one and see if it works.
