CD-iso Problem, Comp does not boot the cd
« on: March 21, 2007, 10:52:09 AM »
Hello all,

I am really a Linux noob here, but I want to start learning with the SME server and start to play around. My problem is I burned the smeserver.iso image, as an image file onto the CD.  I can explore through the CD and everything, but the computer will not boot to the installer.  I tried everything from booting from CD, to trying to do it manually but to no avail. I must be doing something wrong, can someone please give me a small tip or an idea,

Thanks  a Lot

Make sure you write to the CD as so called "track at once".

It depends a little on the kind of software how it will be named ofcourse.

I am using Nero Express 6.  I burn from image to disc, track at once. But to no avail can any computer recognize the CD.  They all act like there is no disc intalled, although when I put the cd in during a windows session, autoplay brings up the explorer window with all the folders and files of the SME.  I must be doing something wrong , because it will not recognize this disk upon bootup.

Which of the files did you download from the site and did you check it agains the md5 file, prior to burning?

Hello,

I downloaded 2 files, the smeserver.exe, and the smeserver-7.0, the latter containing 3 extra files, and the first just the .iso.  I am not quite sure what you mean by checking it against the mdf.  i do have an mdf file that came with the smeserver-7.0 download, but I must admit I do not know what its for.

Oops, sorry for the double post, I meant .md5sum file. Not mdf file, I know what that is. However md5sum is new to me

Hello,

I found out how to check with md5, and the file itself is ok. I think the downloaded file is good, its just a problem with my burning then.  I do copy from image, and track at once.  I will try it again.

Sorry but I don't have Nero so I can't comment on the commands to use.

The burner I have at home has an option "create disc from iso file". I use that and then don't forget to close or finish disc.

Edit: I think you should be downloading this file

smeserver-7.1.iso
. That is what I used last time and it worked.

Stupid question time; you changed the boot order on your pc bios to boot from disc first?

Another stupid question from me (somebody from this forum did that)...
You did burn directly from iso?
Because someone on the forum opened the iso with winrar (it opens .iso if you don't turn this option off) and extracted all the content and wrote it on a cd which off course didn't work.
"It should just work" if it doesn't report it. Thanks!

Me too.
Then you're stuck guessing..."Did they figure it out or did they give up because burning a CD was just too much for them".  :)
