There have been several postings refering to this error message in the log:
kernel: sl0: transmit timed out, bad line quality?
More important than the message, diald does not dial after this happens. I belive this is caused by diald beeing unaware that the modem is on hook. This could be caused by a bad configuration, either of software or modem (should one use &c1 &d2?) but more likely that diald in some situations fails to receive signals when the modem goes on-hook, a result of changes in the 2.2.5.-xx kernels and/or pppd. For some of us this is fun to know, but we all really just want the thing to work.
I wonder if the next e-smith will have a newer diald, my current (e-smith 3.x) is using diald-0.16. Rather old in the opinion of Mike Jagdis:
"Incidentally diald 0.16 is *ancient*. Distributors should, at least, be using 0.16.5 which Eric released a long time ago. Since then I've taken over diald and newer (current 0.99) versions are available from
http://diald.unix.ch."
I haven't been able to connect to that site, and have written Mike about this. If I receive a reply, or find something else I will report back here. On the other hand, if e-smith 4.x is scheduled to include a recent diald the problem might solve itself.
