Topic: Email to be send by server, not workstation

My server is configured as Server only, I have a dynamic IP address although I have a Domain Name registered and the DNS configured appropriately.

I was until recently sending emails via my ISP but I want my server to send the messages out directly. Since doing this I tried to send an email to hotmail.com and found it to be rejected.

I did a little research and found that MSN.com do a reverse DNS search and also don't accept emails from non-routable IPs. When I looked at the returned email message I found that the message was sent directly from my PC not from my SME server.

Can I get my SME server to send out the emails and thus have reverse DNS and the like work properly.

Won't the headers always show that the email originated from your PC's private address, then the next hop, and the next, etc.?  Your email client is handing off the message to some SMTP server, whether it's your SME server or your ISP's.  It would seem to me that MSN (and many other ISPs) just doesn't like email from dynamic IP addresses.  Can you get a static IP?  If not you might be forced to route through your ISP.

Don't bother sending email from a dynamic IP address.  Hotmail, msn, yahoo, and many more will reject them even if you have everything set up properly.

You will need to route your email through your ISP's mail server either directly from the client or you can set up the server to do it as well.

Thanks for the feedback, I was previously routing through my ISP, but wanted everything internal, looks like it is not going to happen.

Yah, it is kind of hit-or-miss with a dynamic IP... I have had no problems delivering mail to some places I thought for sure I would be blocked, but blocked by places I thought for sure would have no problems... Unless you are willing to layout the extra $$ for a static IP, using your ISP is your best bet.

I don't know how you've done that. Server only mode should be configured only with a static IP address, and shouldn't be connected directly to the Internet.

I have my server behind a router and thus it provides all of my firewall etc. That is how I have it working.

What isn't it supposed too?
