Topic: RealTek NIC Issue

So I installed SME Server 7.1 on my Server machine and I seem to be having a problem that it won't work with my NIC.  I have installed the OS and when it boots up it doesn't even say *FAILED* on eth0 at all.  I have staticly set the IP Address that is no used on my Network of Server PC with Gaming PC.

That is the Motherboard that I have.  I have tried to ping www.yahoo.com from Server no Luck.  Did internet Test in the Admin Panel and it won't connect and I tried to ping the Static IP from my Gaming PC and nothing.  How do we go about getting a Realtek NIC from working.

Depending on what version you Realtek NIC is it won't as the 8169 NIC are a known issue not to work.

It is a 8169 NIC so there is no work around for this?  The Realtek Network card is supported under the kernel or is SME making the kernel smaller so it doesn't load those drivers its a common NIC on most motherboards.

Now I'm puzzled... the link you gave us states it's a RTL 8102CL and now you suddenly say it's a RTL8169. Even more puzzled knowing that the specs say that the NIC is doing 10/100 while the 8169 is doing 10/100/1000.

Can you please verify the chipset mounted on the board itself ?

Sorry whatever the link says it is.. is what it is.  I thought the Chipset was the same off the top of my head.  Sometimes I get hardware confused as I do work at a Computer Store and see a Dozen or more PC's a day and sometimes forget what peice of crap MSI motherbaord I have in my Server box.  Thank you for pointing out my error and ask your humble forgiveness on this messup of mine.

I already did a quick check. Realtek doesn't seem to offer ANY driver whatsoever for the 8102 chipset. I don't think that implementing this as a seperate driver youself is an option then. Inclusion in the kernel is maybe possible when the developers have more possibilities as you and I.
But, from my point of view... ditch the board since you are already calling it a crappy board and get 1 that's fully supported by CentOs4.

Sorry I don't think "Ditch The Board" is a valid option just because I cause it shitty.  CentOS and SME Server are the only ones that don't see my NIC Card so its something with these 2 Distro's.  Sorry but I'd rather stear away from SME Server even though it sounds like a great Server Distro because they can't get my NIC working.  Thanks everyone for your help sorry to hear SME isn't Compatible with my Hardware.

It's not the SME Server that isn't compatible with your hardware it's the RHEL 4.x (CENTOS 4.x) that has made your hardware not compatible as the SME Server which is based on

Just disable the onboard NIC and add a PCI NIC. They are cheap enough.

From my experience....
If RH doesn't support it.. buy a new board or a new NIC. Or use another OS.
