I am not one of the developers, but I believe the official response would be that SME is based on Centos, and Centos is still using samba-3.0.10-1.4E.7.

(At least, I've seen the same reason given for continuing to use PHP4 vs. PHP5).

Having said that, if there are no changes to the structure of the configuration files you may well be able to upgrade samba yourself - try it out and let us know what happens...

don't do this. When you upgrade it, if it's going to break something, you'll have to fix it. When you can't you'll ask for help and no one can help (which is a large portion of the boards and bugtracker).

This is the advantage of pulling from an enterprise upstream -RHEL. You pull away from the bleeding edge packages as a trade-off for production reliability. You don't even have to concern yourself with it. Just trust the upstream.

centos 5 is in beta and will be out soon. the sme upgrade will follow shortly.

beta versions below but 3.0.24 may make the final release.

What is the main reason for upgrading samba? If it is security than don't bother as fixes to security issues found in newer releases should be backported to older current releases as well AFAIK..
