Topic: Sme Server Linux Newbie Help

I have a Couple of Question
1.) where can i find a Copy of the sme server Commands or maybe they are Basic Linux Commands ( i need to edit My Dns Host File I think )

2.) I have the sme server set up on my Home network i have a Cable Modem to the internet, i have a Linksys wirless Router connected to the Modem and the Server connected to the Router Running in server only Mode.

I can ping the ip of the server and and resolves. i can ping the server name and it resolves
I can NOT ping the Domain which is xyz.local it will not resolve nor can i ping the mail server mail.xyz.local Host name not Found

DHCP is turned off on the Server i let the linksys router do the Dhcp stuf

I have even taken the server off my home network and setup a hub not connected to the internet and tryed and the same thing.
Any help with this would be Great

Thanks for your Reply and i have looked there I found the Commands do you Know where i would find the dns file to edit ??

Well dns is managed trough the server manager and i think that you sohuld put your server in server gateway and leave the dhcp settings to SME.

I don't know about your settings but my server works just fine like this...
SME----router---LAN

Correct. Unless the SME server is providing the DHCP function, the clients are not likely to know to query the DNS on the SME server. So the fact that server manager manages dns will be ignored.

I don't know about your settings but my server works just fine like this...

So you mean "switch" ratther than router? As you have drawn it, the LAN clients will probably be unable to obtain DHCP leases from the SME server.

Yeah i forgot to mention that i demoted my router to switch duty.

I don't think so, neither you really need to.
You'd rather have to review your home network workstation setting.
If you really do not want to use your SME dhcp server, as suggested by ChalieBrady, you'll have to manually your workstation DNS resolver to your SME server.[/quote]

I found that my work station Host file was never up dated by adding 192.168.xxx.xxx = mail.xxx.lan it worked is there any way to push the enties down to the work staion host files.

Try to register them in your router, this way all clients attached to the router should be able to find them through the DNS of the router and there is no need to publish them in any host file on any system.
