Topic: Newbie Question. How to change username of admin account?

OK, I'm having a difficult time finding this info. I have looked at the documentation but might have missed something. I have also searched the forum for this but can't find it there either...

I want to change the "admin" account (and root as well if at all possible) to other names for security reasons. If the names have to stay there for some reason that's OK as long as they don't have any useful rights and can be honeypots for all I care. I've been working on Windows/Mac systems for years but have just started working with Linux based systems.

Any help, pointers, or links would be helpful.

From my experience: you can't change those names. It would cause you so many problems, it's just not worth the effort.

It's not a good idea ( & I don't think it's possible) to give the admin rights to a different user on the SME system. I understand where you are coming from, but SME just doesn't work like that. For the most part, it is what it is, and it does what it does well enough.

Best to just set a strong password.

OK, if that's the way it is I guess I will have to live with it.

I REALLY like working with SME and have been using it for a few months now. I just feel weird leaving the God account with such an obvious name.

This is what I do, even though people on here won't recommend it, I change the root password at the command line so it is different from the admin password. Root has a lot more privileges than admin.

Yeah, I've considered that and have seen a few posts about splitting the passwords. The only thing is that as long as the passwords are not guessable or vulnerable to a dictionary style attack then it shouldn't matter much.

I mean really, what cracker is gonna know my ultra secret uber 1337 password of Password1? (See, I have a Capital, lower case, AND a NUMBER!!!)

I do intend on looking over the logs frequently to see if there is a problem so I can act accordingly. I have also set up a regular backup schedule with offsite storage in case of a problem. (or more importantly for disaster recovery.)
