7.1.3 on Microsoft Virtual PC
« on: April 25, 2007, 03:07:32 AM »
Has anyone managed to get SME 7.1.3 working on Microsoft Virtual PC. I noticed it's now a freebie, so I thought it might be a good idea to get an SME test machine running on it. When I load it up it crashed. I don't have the exact error message in front of me. (I know, that's not helpful), I'm just wondering if anyone has done it and has any tips/tricks for me. It works in 7.1.

I'll try and recreate the server to get the error, when I get a chance.

Hi Simitro,

I have not tried the MS product, but any of SME versions including the latest run very well within Vmware.

I tried the other day and it haulted with a kernel panic.

Just download VMWare, it works out of the box.

You actually want VMWare Server.

I'm running on MS Virtual PC 2007 without problem.

It working fine on my system. I'm running WinXP Pro. as my OS. and Setup Virtual PC 2007. Then install SME 7.1.3 from .iso
It's running as the real Server. You should setup Virtual PC as Other system. Not for Win98 or WinXP or other. Memory should be more than 256 MB. and better if 512 MB.

Any thing wrong with your setting. Please give me more info?

No. He just misstyped. 7.1 is the current published version (unless he made a custom ISO).
"It should just work" if it doesn't report it. Thanks!

For SME Server on Virtual PC

I'm also download SME Server the lastest version as file name smeserver-7.1.iso from download page at smeserver.org and setup it in MS Virtual PC 2007. Also you can burn this image file to cd and setup it from cdrom.

In MS Virtual PC it has the menu to capture file .iso and loaded as real cdrom.

He was actually asking as I have else where ... Is there a ISO of version 7.1.3 available for download? The answer i have got is it is too hard to create ISO and we will have to wait until version 7.2.

I say, it is no harder to create any ISO than any other ISO.  The unfortunate part of this story is, I don't have the knowedge or know how to do it myself. Otherwise I would and would have a link on my website for it.

I hope the developers and management are listening

I have already done some research and only ask questions if I still can't work it out.

Teviot there has been a lot of discussion about releasing the newest versions but it has been established that there isn't enough man power to make new isos because of the upgrades that come from centos as well as updates for sme.
