You don't have to change your domain, if you still want to use the boarral.com as well. You just add your subdomain in your server manager. whan you have done that, you can point your ibay's to the several domains which are listed at the domains panel.
I am slowly getting a better understanding of how this system works.
In Domains, I only have boarral.com. (I tried fn.boarral.com when I first started using SME, but realized that I add fn in the Hostnames and Addresses section.) It is in the Domains section that I specify using the primary ibay. Because it is the only item in the Domains section, I cannot tell it to use the primary ibay for
www.boarral.com and the fn ibay for fn.boarral.com -- it is just one setting, for boarral.com. So I do not see where I specify different ibays for different subdomains or virtual domains, only the primary domain. I named my ibay the same as my subdomain -- fn -- in hopes that maybe there was some trick to SME trying to match up subdomains with a matching ibay, but no luck.
In Hostnames and Addresses, where I actually add fn.boarral.com, there is no option anywhere to link it to a specific ibay, just publishing it. (Which works with
http://www.boarral.com/fn/ because I made it public.)
I followed the link that you provided, and noticed that that person is getting things to work with forum.domain.com, but he does not explain how he did it -- only that he wants domain.com to point somewhere other than
www.domain.com. Someone did start posting information about configuration virtual domains, but it appears to be all done from the console. This is how I have traditionally done it, but not in the form of a template. If this is how it must be done, I can do that, but I hate messing with files manually when a front end has been provided, since it tends to break things in my experience.
Thank you again for your help. I feel I am getting so close to fixing this with all your help.
