I installed the latest e-smith and told it I wanted a login before I get to the console for security purposes, but now after I enter my username and password, I don't get the console, nor can I find any docs anywhere that tell YOU HOW TO START THE CONSOLE.

http://www.e-smith.org/docs/manual/5.1/console-rootprompt.html

From this article:

If you are an expert user and would like to do advanced modifications to the configuration of your server, you can access the Linux operating system underlying the SME Server V5 with ServiceLink software by logging in as the user "root". If your server is displaying the server console and not a login prompt, you can press Alt-F2 to switch to another screen with a login prompt. To switch back, press Alt-F1. You should always ensure that you log out from the root account when you are finished and before you switch back to the server console.

The password for the "root" user is whatever password is currently set for the administrator of the server. Note that this is the same password as that used by the "admin" user account.

Yeah, I understand that, but I am not needing to switch back and forth. I wanted to:
Boot:
Login:
Do stuff
Start the browser (lynx?)

Dear agadak
After the system has booted up and displayed the sme server login prompt you have 2 basic choices.
You log in as user name =root and password=the system password. This gives you the command prompt to do anything your linux heart desires.

Alternatively login as user name=admin and password=the system password. This gives you a pretty menu to choose various options from, and also allows you access to a text style server manager for setting user user configuration.

What else is it that you are after ??
