Problems connecting to some sites
« on: February 23, 2000, 02:02:10 PM »
I have been running E-Smith since last August (ish). I came in this morning, and it seems that the sites we connect to most often (slashdot (me), a Boeing secure parts site(everbody else)) are unavailable, as is the email pop box.

My setup at the moment is: Esmith 3.1 on a P133/32MB/6.4GB and 3Com 3C905B cards, with a DLink ISDN router doing the connecting for me. Everybody connects through Squid (I cannot connect directly: I think because I set the router/Eth1 to a different subnet).

Twice in the past 6 months I have lost all browsing and had to reduce the Avg cached object size (down to 5K at the moment). Is it something to do with my cache files? Should I flush them out or something?

I can ping and traceroute these sites, just not get any information from them.

Any ideas?

Hello David,

Yes, we've found that at some sites users tend to visit a lot of small objects. In e-smith 4.0 we've reduce the average object size parameter to 3K, down from the default of 13K which was used in e-smith 3.1.

I recommend changing the setting to 3K and rebooting. Please let us know how it turns out.

Best regards,
- Joe Morrison

p.s. Direct connection should work too - are you sure your e-smith server is configured correctly? Are you in server and gateway or server-only mode?

Hi joe

Yep, I tried that, and I can now get to Boeing but still not slashdot. I can surf the web fine, e-smith.org, slashcode.org, microsoft.com, younameiticangetit.com. Any ideas? I have lots of files in /var/spool/squid. There are directories up to 0F. Is this my problem, and if so can I delete some of them?

btw I have e-smith set up as a server and gateway. lack of direct access doesn't really bother me (lets me keep track of everybody) except I can't get pop mail from anywhere other than my own server

I don't know if it is relevant, but I has some trouble reading slashdot yesterday,  and there wasn't an e-smith server/gateway in sight.

Or just restarting squid:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/squid restart

You may have encountered problems at slashdot.

No, you don't want to do that. Squid manages those, and will delete files when it needs to.

What happens when you try? You should be able to access other pop servers, so we need to know what symptoms you see to try to establish the cause of your problem.

A lot of people have been havin problems connecting to slashdot recently, so this is not a e-smith problem.

hello everybody,

I have been have similar probs, with a similar spec machine including 3C905B's. The trouble I have been having is, that when the gateway is used as a gateway, ie ethernet to the net and ethernet to the LAN, the gateway becomes unuseable for any internet activity - web, mail just about anything cept ping!, but also thet file servering becomes incredibliy slow. I even reinstalled e-smith, no change. We have borrowed a replacement gateway, and "old" gateway is being used as a file server. I have no idea what the problem might be.

Any ideas??
