Network not operational (solved)
« on: May 18, 2007, 12:06:06 PM »
My setup: Internet -- ADSL modem -- SME router as server/gateway (PPPOE, DHCP server) -- hub --- LAN . This setup was working for years under v6.
Install of v7.1 went okay. Two nics were previously used in v6 installation (as was the rest of the hardware) without any problems. ifconfig reports both MACs okay, but neither seem to be sending/receiving, cannot ping from LAN, cannot access internet either yet everything seems to be operational and PPPOE log shows continuous tries to connect. Tried rebooting my ADSL modem, no difference, network still dead. What really bothers me is why even LAN does not know about SME router? Where do I need to look for more info?
That's a lot of questions but I am really scratching my head here.

I can imagine that it would be more usefull to hand out what NIC's you are using. With the current info there is not much to go on.

Thanks for your reply.

One nic is Accton Technology Corporation SMC2-1211TX and the other Realtek Semiconductor RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ . Both seem to be detected by SME correctly.

How does it seems like that? Did you try ifconfig already?

Does your ADSLmodem have an indicator that shows a connection to your server is present/active ? (cable detect)

Did you upgrade or freshy install SME7 ?

Have you tried another switch/hub for your internal network already ?

Yes, I did run ifconfig and both nics are reported showing their MACs.

It looks that the modem is connected okay.
It was fresh install.

Regarding switch, I haven't  tried another one yet. But that's an idea. Will give it a go as soon as I can find another hub.

Tried another hub, still the same problem. However, I think I found solution. It appears that kernel series 2.6.9 has some bizarre bug(s) with IRQ channels and when I used "irqpoll" option, the network almost miraculously, came back.

Thanks to all the posters who bothered to send replies. Your help is much appreciated.
