request from isp to set up dns addresses
« on: May 19, 2007, 08:00:58 AM »
I have 5mbps residential dynamic adsl.

After my internet connection dropped too often my isp helpline advised me for the following set-up :
pppoE ( same as before )
dynamic ip ( same as before )
primary dns : 165.21.83.88
secondary dns : 165.21.100.88

My provider is singnet.com.sg - but there is nothing in their webpage listed for this setup.

How to set up prim / sec dns address of isp in sme 7.1.3 ?

SME is able to resolve the dns addresses automatically though as far as I know you can type them in by yourself as well. Log in as admin to get the console. Configure your server, at the end their is an option to give dns addresses.

I do not think so. When logging in as admin at the end of the setup routine there is a 'corporate dns server address' screen but you can only input 1 dns address. My isp also requires me to put these dns addresses in maunually - no auto as advised by me isp

Your ISP is misleading you. Configuring use of their DNS servers will not help with your problem of the Internet connection dropping.

If you describe the symptoms that you are trying to solve, then someone here may be able to help you.

yes - could very well be my isp is misleading me. They constantly come up with funny excuses why things do not work.

Can you give me a precise answer why this is nonesense ( misleading ) which I can pass on to my isp

please

SImple really - DNS is not used to maintain a PPPoE link from your place to your ISP.

But maybe you haven't described the problem accurately to us. What lead you to conclude that your "internet connection dropped too often"?
