VMWare on SME 7.1.3
« on: May 22, 2007, 07:12:40 PM »
I have searched for answers and have come up short so I thought I would ask the experts.
I followed the steps from Sonora Com. and everything seems to be fine. The problem I have is using the remote VM console to administer the various Virtual Machines I want and need to test.
Has anyone gotten the VM console to work and if would they be willing to help out either through this thread or off-line.

I realize this many not be appropriate in this forum but I am at a lose as to how to get this working.

We use SME for various tasks in many locations this is just the next step.
If it will not work thats fine I will attempt to try a different means.

Just thought I would ask the group

Thanks for your time

Alex

What do you mean by "remote VM console"?
Console running on the workstation located on LAN should just work.
If you trying to connect from Internet, it will not work without VPN or special configuration since VMWare by defaut bound only to eth0 (LAN) interface.

I have the following
smeserver-vmware-server-0.0.1-4.el4.sme.noarch.rpm
VMware-mui-1.0.3-44356.tar.gz
VMware-server-1.0.3-44356.i386.rpm

and all the various yum updates that went along with this
The VMWare MUI works fine - I can log on via the ip and port with either root or admin and see all the various objects I can change

I then go to my workstation (Win XP) running the VMware Server Console which I downloaded from the MUI page I cannot gain access to the remote host (SME server running VMWare).

It just runs forever and does not connect (received this message - C:/ob/bora-44356/pompeii2005/bora/lib/connect/authdConnection.c:886 ret 0 err 0 ) or I get the standard - 'Not Responding' message from my WinXP workstation

As far as I know the standard port 902 is open and I am running it local on the LAN - workstation can ping the host server on the same subnet - just cannot administer the host through the VMware Server Console so I can add virtual machines.

Maybe the version I used is just to new?

Ok, I have real progress now. I found that if I include vmware-authd: and my IP address of the WinXp workstation I can use the VMWare server console and start installing a new os.
The problem now is I don't know how to expand the hosts.allow to /etc/e-smith/templates-custom/etc/hosts.allow

I tried using the /sbin/e-smith/expand-template /etc/hosts.allow but this did not work.

Tried looking a bit for the proper command but it is way past the end of the day. I will do more looking later.

Thanks again for your help
