Forgive me for my NT4.0/samba newbie question, but...

If I set up a 5.1.2 SME box to be a domain, add accounts etc., will I be able to point NT4.0 servers at it as the primary domain controller?

Will the SME users be able to authenticate against the NT4.0 servers?

If so, what are the default local and domain group accounts?

Is there any documentation I can read that summarizes this for me?

Here's my 2 cents,

You could add the NT4 servers as clients of the SME workgroup.
Or you can setup the NT4 servers as clients of the SME Domain (workgroup name in SME). Just setup the SME to be a Domain Controller, and on the NT4 systems, add them to the SME domain. You will have to assign usernaem/password to the different NT4 servers if you have more than 1. I would do it like this;

NT4 Server #1:
computer name=nt4server1
username=nt4server1
password=[whatever]
and so one if you have more than 1

SME;
Workgroup domain contreoller=yes
setup the useraccount for the NT4 servers with the same password.

I am presently installing NT4 server in a VMWare seesion. I will let you know if I come accross problems.

My question is, will the SME users and groups translate to the NT server?

ie. will I be able to control access to the server using the SME users and groups?

Can I set up a share on the NT server that only people from the accounting group on the SME server can access?

Can I log onto the server directly as an SME users.

What is the process to assign local groups to remote users etc.

Can it be done?  If so, how?

I dout it pretty much since the NT server would have to be a BDC which I don't think works in Linux. (correct  me if I'm wrong!)

You could setup groups/users in NT4 and setup your shares in NT4 with associated permissions

I guess if you setup the admin user with an account on the NT4 with administrator permissions, you should be able to.

Please be more specific.

I have setup a NT4 server here, and I can't get him on the SME domain.
Error Says: Unable to connect to the domain controller for this domain.

Although, I can setup the NT4 server as part of the workgroup as setup in the SME. I'm confused. I've setup the NT4 Server as a stand alone server.

What did you do exactly to have the NT4 SERVER added to the SME domain?
