Recommendations for a quiet/near-silent PC for SME Svr?
« on: June 14, 2007, 09:15:57 PM »
Is anyone out there running SME Server on a very quiet/near-silent PC - and if so, would you mind saying where you got the PC?  I need to replace my aging and very noisy server and also need to move it into my home office - so I'm looking for something very quiet that can also run SME Server 7.x.

I've been looking at the Shuttle XPC line ( http://us.shuttle.com/ ) and also been scanning http://silentpcreview.com but I'm curious if anyone is actually running SME Server 7 on any of these systems.  And yes, I could build my own, but I don't want to deal with that... I just want to buy a quiet system.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

I have used two Shuttle XPC for the past three years. One of these ran SME 24/7 for 32 months. Never had a problem. I bought these as bare bones units; these days Shuttle offers a server line but I haven't tried them.

I did upgrade the fans to models with lower db, and installed vibration pads on the mounts. That was a major improvement, sound wise. I also use Seagate Barracuda 80 GB drives. While not the least noisy you might find, they are within my tolerance and have been reliable.

As an aside, one thing I want to try this winter is to load SME on a Mac Mini and see how it fast it boils the drives.
