Poor performance with gallery2/webmail/wordpress
« on: June 17, 2007, 08:13:48 PM »
I'm trying to get some direction/suggestions on what is needed to speed up the performance of my sme installation.  I want to check out gallery2 and wordpress, but my system seems to be getting bogged down a bit.  My load jumps to 3 as soon as I try to view the gallery page and email is slow as well as wordpress.

In the past I have run a small server before with just static pages and things were pretty snappy on low-end hardware.  Below are the specs on what I am running now.

Celeron 600 MHz
128 MB RAM
80 GB Hard Drive

One thing I noticed when trying to upload pictures to the gallery is that the convert process runs out of memory and is stopped.  Will more memory solve my problem with slow performance or do I need to get a faster CPU as well?  If so does anyone have some suggestions on the amount of RAM and speed of CPU or dual CPU's?  I am just using this system at home for my email and web site.  I've seen a number of servers on ebay with 733 or 1000 MHz dual processors but I do not know if that will be a big enough improvement or if I should just build a new system with a single core or dual core 3.0 GHz CPU.  I am on a limited budget and would like to keep things cheap <$300.

Thanks for any suggestions.

You need more ram. At least 512mb more.
"It should just work" if it doesn't report it. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply.  That will definitely save me some money over buying a whole other used system with upgraded specs.

Well, I just found out in the specs for my current system that it will only support up to 256 MB of RAM.

Any suggestions for specs on a used system purchase are appreciated.  Do I just need more memory or should I get a processor over 1 GHz?

You need more memory. Whith 512 you have a good server, you can hosting a few web pages. Remember, mysql, php, and other services requiere memory to run correctly.
If you can, increase memory to 1 or 2 Gb.

Well i use Celeron 1,7 with 768mb ram and it hasn't failed me once (also runs gallery2 and some other stuff). Older INTEL procesors and boards are really cheap now so you shouldn't have to pay much for a new server.

You have enough disk space, but it does depend on the amount of pictures you'll store.  Make sure that you use raid1 if you can afford another disk of the same size it can save your data someday.

But you should try to update bios on your board and add more ram first. If it doesn't work buy a used board.
