Cannot receive mail from one external mailserver
« on: June 19, 2007, 02:14:30 PM »
Hi,

Running SME V7.1.

I receive mail from all external users except for one.

When anybody on that particular remote server, (call it "EXTERNAL"), sends a mail to any mailbox on my server it is returned with:

Your message

Subject: "Test E-mail from EXTERNAL"
could not be delivered to some or all of the intended recipients.

It seems that the EXTERNAL mail server is using only the 2nd and 3rd MX records which do not point to our server and will not, of course, accept mail messages.
Our internal MX records are:
Quote
0          mail.int-suisse.ch          212.59.163.194  86400
10         mx1.tic.ch         146.228.80.105  86400
20         mx2.tic.ch         146.228.80.106  86400

The EXTERNAL server is using MAIL MARSHAL.

Does anyone have any ideas on this problem?

Cheers.
Alex

"of course"?? If a mail server will not accept mail for your domain, you must not list it in an MX record for your domain.

As to why EXTERNAL is not using your highest preference MX record? That's their problem, and they'll need to diagnose and fix it.

Hi,

Yes I thought that was the case but how do I remove the 2nd ad 3rd MX records on my SME server?
Do I modify a configuration file or us there a tool within SMS for this?

I should add that I have not consiously added the 2nd an 3rd records.

Thanks for your help
Cheers,
Alex

You don't do this from SME. You have to remove them via your dns provider.

SME doesn't have anything to do with your problem here.
"It should just work" if it doesn't report it. Thanks!
