sme7admin - sometimes displays charts, sometimes not
« on: June 21, 2007, 06:15:49 PM »
Anyone else having this problem? Sometimes when I go to view the graphs in sme7admin, the charts show just fine - colourful, informative etc.

Other times I go in, and all the charts are blank - just the grids are shown.

The CPU/disk/etc warnings appear to work fine, and I can't locate any error messages or warnings.

Does it generally behave like this, or are the graph displays normally rock-solid?

The question is :
Does sme7admin stops logging during some period ? i.e. if you ask for a large period view, do you have "holes" in the graph. Means all graphs are showing a blank for exactly the same period.

In this case, you can know that sme7admin stops loggind during certain periods (can come from several raisons, including high cpu charge or daemon stopped for certain reasons).

In the case you have no graph at all, for me it is due to the plugin used by your browser to show png (or gif if you choosed it in the config page).
This appends frequently on mac machine with safari for me.

I had a couple servers that did the same thing -- sometimes the sme7admin graphs worked fine, sometimes they didn't display.

Sometimes the problem was that the data collection daemon was not running, sometimes there seemed to be no specific cause.

The problems all went away when I changed my spam filtering settings and stopped overloading my under-powered servers...

I don't think so. It is not like I can see the logs with holes in - I can see the logs or a can't.

When I first installed the contrib, I didn't get anything for a couple of days. Then all of a sudden nice colour graphs. Then a few days later I've not been able to get a graph back out of it again.

This happens on a couple of servers, from 1GHz PIII to a 3GHz PIV. It could just be that the graphs are not being drawn properly, but all logging continues fine. The e-mails to the admin to notify that the logging tool daemon is starting and stopping are coming through okay. Also I get warnings mailed through to me when CPU etc. reaches its threashold, so monitoring is happening.

I'l' raise a bug when I have some more consistent or detailed information, but just wanted to run it past the good people here first to see how other's experiences fare.

Edited: you mention reporting longer periods, well that has never worked for me either. I try to select 'week' or 'month' and just returns the last 24 hours (albeit an empty 24-hour grid). This is the same for all the charts. I'm going to guess that this has something to do with it. Perhaps it perpetually reports only the next 24 hours ;-)

Well, SME7ADMIN does seem to be able to distinguish between spam, viruses and normal mail in its graphs, so I guess all these things are interlinked. Perhaps some unexpected interactions happening there?

I'll have a play.

Hi

I have SME7admin running on about 30 Servers.

I do get longer-term graphs from all of my servers.

The service occasionally "drops out", meaning the pid file has to be removed and the service (sme7admin) restarted. This is when "holes" appear in the graphs.

As far as I can see, this happens mostly when the box is at high use, say backup 2 disk or the clamav check on some big ZIP files running in the background.

Otherwise, it seems quite stable...

I have never ben able to get long term graphs when using IE but fine on Firefox. There is another thread on this.

When I get blank graphs it is always beause the daemon has stopped.

Thanks - I'm finding it more stable these days - not so many empty graphs. A few SME updates have been applied, so it could just have been problems with particular versions clashing.
